Lymph nodes, also known as lymph glands, are oval-shaped tissue masses that defend the body against infection and cancer. Here's everything you need to know about their function in infections and cancer.

The lymphatic system, which comprises of lymph nodes and lymph veins, is present in everyone's body. Lymph is a transparent fluid that collects from tissues all over the body and is carried by lymph veins. Cancer cells, germs, and viruses are found in the lymph. This fluid subsequently drains into lymph nodes, where it is filtered by infection-fighting lymph node cells. These infection-fighting cells, commonly known as white blood cells, kill cancerous and infection-related cells that are alien or "bad."

When immune cells within a lymph node grow or swell, it indicates that they are fighting an infection or malignancy. This is known as lymphadenopathy, or simply adenopathy.

Lymph nodes are found in clusters throughout the body, such as in the armpit, groin, neck, pelvic, and belly. The lymph nodes are placed superficially in some locations, such as the neck, and can be palpated – they feel like a pea or small bean. Lymph nodes in other parts of the body, such as the belly and chest, are deeper and cannot be felt.

Infection, cancer, or any condition affecting the immune system can all cause swollen or enlarged lymph nodes.

1. Swollen lymph nodes are most commonly associated with a mild infection that the immune system is battling. When you have an ear infection, a sore throat, or a tooth abscess, paratracheal lymph nodes in your neck may swell and become uncomfortable.

2. Swollen lymph nodes will decrease back to normal size once the infection has disappeared.

My Tonsils Swell Occasionally. Do Tonsils Have Lymph Nodes?

Tonsils are lymphatic organs that function similarly to lymph nodes, albeit they are much larger. The spleen is a lymphoid organ that filters blood rather than lymph fluid. It is positioned on the left side of your belly.
